Facts about Autism


  • The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates autism’s prevalence as 1 in 68 children in the United States. This includes 1 in 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls.
  • An estimated 50,000 teens with autism become adults – and lose school-based autism services – each year.
  • Around one third of people with autism remain nonverbal.
  • Around one third of people with autism have an intellectual disability.
  • Certain medical and mental health issues frequently accompany autism. They include gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, seizures, sleep disturbances, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety and phobias.

Possible signs of Autism in Babies/Toddlers

What to look for?


  • Lack of smiling or other expressions towards others within the first 6 months
  • Very limited eye contact within the first 6 months
  • No babbling by the age of 1
  • No response to childs name by age of 1 No use of gestures to communicate i.e. reaching or pointing for objects or items
  • No words by 16 months
  • No meaningful words or phrases by the age of 2

Possible signs of Autism Across Age Groups

  • Lack of eye contact
  • Prefers to be alone
  • Lack of understanding of others feelings
  • Non-verbal of delayed speech
  • If verbal, repeats words or phrases over and over (echolalia)
  • Will overreact to basic transition in activities or removal of objects
  • Performs repetitive non-functional behaviors such as flapping hands, clapping hands, etc
  • Restricted interests or routines i.e. wants same routine consistently without variation
