Facts about Autism
- The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) estimates autism’s prevalence as 1 in 68 children in the United States. This includes 1 in 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls.
- An estimated 50,000 teens with autism become adults – and lose school-based autism services – each year.
- Around one third of people with autism remain nonverbal.
- Around one third of people with autism have an intellectual disability.
- Certain medical and mental health issues frequently accompany autism. They include gastrointestinal (GI) disorders, seizures, sleep disturbances, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), anxiety and phobias.

What to look for?
- Lack of smiling or other expressions towards others within the first 6 months
- Very limited eye contact within the first 6 months
- No babbling by the age of 1
- No response to childs name by age of 1 No use of gestures to communicate i.e. reaching or pointing for objects or items
- No words by 16 months
- No meaningful words or phrases by the age of 2
Possible signs of Autism Across Age Groups
- Lack of eye contact
- Prefers to be alone
- Lack of understanding of others feelings
- Non-verbal of delayed speech
- If verbal, repeats words or phrases over and over (echolalia)
- Will overreact to basic transition in activities or removal of objects
- Performs repetitive non-functional behaviors such as flapping hands, clapping hands, etc
- Restricted interests or routines i.e. wants same routine consistently without variation
